Just like Allie, I have “spurts” of activity in which I try to “catch up” with everything I’ve left undone in my entire life! I have nightmares of trying to find where my final exams are being held (that was the quarter I had Mono and couldn’t attend most of my classes – I still wake up sweaty with tachycardia). My activity level goes from about 5% to 90%. I frantically rush from room to room, picking things up and putting them down somewhere else. Eventually, all energy gone, joints burning, muscles aching, I collapse in my precious recliner and lie back. All the things I picked up are now in the wrong places, but different wrong places than previously. The Swiffer dry mop is leaning crookedly against the wall in the dining room instead of in the cleaning closet. The Swiffer duster is resting precariously on the edge of the buffet. The litter pan is empty in the bathroom. I need to refill it. The cat is yowrling – needs to be fed – Emmy is staring at me – she needs food, too.

I’m sitting, compulsively playing “Majong Titans.”

Finally, I drag myself up, feed Emmy, fill Magnus’ litter pan, and tell Himself I love him, and to please don’t be mad because I “did it again.” Himself hugs me.

I’m no artist, like Allie is. I’d search for more appropriate illustrations, but it’s just too much for me to handle at this point.

The question of the day is: What invention, as in something not yet invented (jetpack, teleportation ring, time machine) do you most need right now?

My answer: A bionic body that would work better and without pain than my current body does. I’d like to be able to exercise without pain so I could lose weight. I’d like to be able to go places with my grandchildren – without pain! I’d like to be able to go to the mall – without pain!

A bionic body would take care of the joint and back problems. Maybe it would also take care of the muscle problems.

That’s what I (and Himself) need – right NOW!!

The whole celebrity bit bugs me. Just being a celebrity IS NOT a reason for the Walk of Fame, for multiple photo layouts, nor for big concerts costing an unbelievable $75 and up per seat. For KIDS to go to??? To see half-talented, and shock-talented TWERPS??

Yeah – ALL this annoys me.

1. I could fill up the whole list with John Wayne movies! He is just the epitome of “guy,” to me, and his movies have been (and continue to be) enjoyed by all the guys I know. So, instead of listing all his movies and missing out on others, I’ll just list him at the top of the list: JOHN WAYNE
2. Another actor who could fill up the list by himself is Bruce Willis, so I’ll just list him: BRUCE WILLIS
3. Every Bond Movie except Never Say Never Again
4. The Great Escape (1963) – but even better was The Great Escape II: The Untold Story that we had the foresight to tape off TV back in the late 80′s. It’s never been replayed that we know of, and it’s not out on DVD – or we’d buy it! The guys in my life love it.
5. The Magnificent Seven (1960)
6. Platoon (1986)
7. Most of Mel Gibson’s films, especially Lethal Weapon I-IV

My father's side of the family is pretty much unknown to me. So is my maternal grandfather's side. I may have to join Ancestry.Com one of these years, and get serious about tracing the family back farther. No rich people that I know of, just common shopkeepers and tradesmen. But I wish I knew more about the actual people.

I would be visiting Marie Curie.

The Flanders Field Poppy

It brought to mind my grandfather, who fought in WWI in France under General John J. “Blackjack” Pershing. I never heard any stories – he never told any, to my knowledge – not unusual among those in WWI. They saw things that shook them to their cores. Many of them were affected by PTSD for the rest of their lives. They fought valiantly, both at war, and afterward.

My father was in the Army Air Corps in WWII, but was stationed stateside the entire war. However, he was available to go overseas at a moment’s notice.

My husband’s father was in the Navy in WWII. He was a bosun’s mate and drove an LST in the South Pacific – my husband thinks it was at Tarawa.

My husband was in the Marines, briefly. He was mustered out (AFTER passing basic at Parris Island with promotion to private) because he had an old injury to his right shoulder and arm. The MD decided he wouldn’t be able to handle a pistol with his right hand. He cried all the way back home. But he has taken pride in the fact he was in the Marines, for however short a period.

Oldest son served in the Army in the 82nd Airborne for 12 years. Daughter served in the Army in the Tank Corps for 4 years. Youngest son served in the Navy Medical Corps, stationed with the Marines, for 6 years.

This is a great country, but as Thomas Jefferson said, “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.” In order to remain a free nation, we must be willing and prepared to shed our blood to protect it. I’m proud of the military history of our family. And I hope our tradition passes down to our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I hope we can instill the kind of patriotism their forefathers had into our grandchildren. I fear they will see major conflicts in their lifetimes. I hope they face these honorably and patriotically.
